Nourishment with Dignity: What Herbs, Meals, and Elder Abuse Awareness Have in Common

Elder Abuse Awareness Month

At first glance, herbs and spices might seem like a light, cheerful theme. They bring color, fragrance, and flavor to our meals—and to this month’s issue of The Scoop. But look a little deeper, and you’ll see they also symbolize something much greater: care, dignity, and the right of every person to live fully and well.

This month, Alicia writes beautifully about generational connections through food—how basil, chives, and parsley became threads between grandparents and grandchildren. Meals are more than just sustenance; they are moments of love, ritual, and memory. Preparing food with intention is an act of care.

Sadly, not every older adult receives that care. Many in our community—some right in your neighborhood—are living without the support they need to thrive. Some are isolated. Others are skipping meals. And some are experiencing neglect or abuse.

June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month, and it’s a time to remember that abuse isn’t always loud or visible. It can look like an empty fridge. A home with no heat. A medication bottle long unfilled. A neighbor no longer answering the phone.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15, and we invite you to stand with us by wearing purple, the official color of elder justice. It’s a small act that carries big meaning—raising visibility, sparking conversation, and reminding us that we all have a role to play in protecting those who came before us.

At NEKCOA, we believe that dignity is non-negotiable. That’s why our programs—like Home Delivered Meals, caregiver support groups, and case management services—exist to wrap support around older Vermonters in meaningful ways. A hot meal delivered by a friendly driver is not just about food; it's about connection and safety.

This June, you can help by:

  • Learning the signs of elder abuse, including neglect and financial exploitation
  • Checking in on older adults in your life and community
  • Supporting services like our Fuel Fund or Meals on Wheels
  • Wearing purple on June 15 and sharing why elder justice matters
  • Telling your story—your voice helps lawmakers understand the importance of what we do

When we care for our elders with the same intention and respect we bring to a lovingly prepared meal, we create a world where aging is honored—not feared.

So as you rub basil between your fingers or watch chives sway in the garden, remember: nourishment is more than food—it’s a form of justice.

Let’s make this June flavorful in every way. 💜
