Stay Safe, Stay Independent: Fall Prevention Month

Falls are the leading cause of injury among older Vermonters, but the good news is that most falls can be prevented. Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the ER for a fall-related injury. With the right support, small changes in daily habits, home safety, and physical activity can dramatically reduce that risk.

At the Northeast Kingdom Council on Aging (NEKCOA), fall prevention is about more than safety — it’s about protecting independence, confidence, and quality of life for seniors across Caledonia, Essex, and Orleans counties.

Free Fall Risk Assessments in the Northeast Kingdom

NEKCOA offers free fall risk assessments to help older Vermonters identify and reduce hazards before an injury happens. Call our Helpline at 1-800-642-5119 to schedule yours. Our team will guide you through simple steps to improve safety and connect you with resources tailored to your needs.

Fall Prevention Exercise Programs in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom

Staying active, strong, and balanced is one of the most effective ways to prevent falls. NEKCOA brings two nationally recognized, evidence-based fall prevention exercise programs to communities throughout the Northeast Kingdom:

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (AFEP) – Gentle, joint-friendly classes that improve flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance. AFEP is proven to reduce arthritis pain, increase mobility, and help prevent falls by boosting balance and confidence.

Fall Prevention Tai Chi (FPTC) – Gentle, flowing Tai Chi movements that strengthen legs, improve posture, and enhance balance. Studies show Tai Chi can significantly lower the risk of falling while promoting mindfulness and relaxation.

Both programs are offered free with a suggested donation, with classes available in St. Johnsbury, Lyndonville, Hardwick, and many more Northeast Kingdom towns. Many classes also include Zoom options so you can participate from home. These wellness classes are designed to help Vermont seniors stay strong, independent, and connected.

Expanding Fall Prevention Programs in the NEK

We are committed to expanding these fall prevention exercise programs into areas of the Northeast Kingdom where they are not yet offered. To make this possible, NEKCOA is looking for new leaders to train as AFEP or Tai Chi instructors. Training is provided, and instructors become part of a community effort to keep older Vermonters safe and independent.

If you or someone you know might be interested in becoming a leader, please call our Helpline at 1-800-642-5119.

Take the First Step Toward Fall Prevention

Preventing falls doesn’t have to be complicated. Start today by calling the NEKCOA Helpline at 1-800-642-5119 to schedule a free fall risk assessment, and ask about wellness classes in your area.

Together, we can make falls less likely — and independence more possible for older Vermonters across the Northeast Kingdom.
